Areas of Focus

I graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Afterwards, I moved to Charlotte to pursue my Master’s in Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Through my studies, I learned crucial counseling principles and practical ways to address a variety of struggles.

The education and training I received prepared me to confidently guide my clients. Today, I use my expertise to provide thoughtful care that helps people feel understood and respected.

My Journey from Small-Town Outsider to Empathetic Counselor

I grew up in small-town Kentucky, surrounded by traditional values that didn’t always match my own. Early on, I realized how rare it was to find someone who listened without judgment. The reality is, harsh words and criticism are difficult to avoid, especially if you don’t fit a certain mold.

During my youth, I deeply valued people who accepted me exactly as I was. One therapist in particular gave me a safe, welcoming space where I felt truly understood, and our conversations stuck with me long after. They allowed me to show up fully as my sometimes goofy, non-traditional self. That profound sense of acceptance changed my life forever.

When I discovered mental health counseling could be a career, I was instantly drawn to it. Being present, supportive, and curious about other people’s stories seemed like the ideal profession. I wanted to create an accepting environment for people who needed it, just as I had once needed it myself.

Now, as a counselor, I encourage people to share the parts of themselves they’ve often felt the need to hide. I dedicate my sessions to making sure those parts feel seen, heard, and unapologetically welcome.

The Well-Rounded Experiences That Guide Me in Every Session

Over the years, I’ve gained vital experience that continues to shape how I serve my clients. I began counseling in 2021 during my graduate studies. Since then, I’ve worked in both private practice and non-profit settings.

I’ve supported clients across many stages of life, including children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and couples. While many have come to me about anxiety and depression, I’ve also helped people facing trauma, substance abuse, grief, and relationship challenges. I focus on meeting each person where they are and building an honest connection.

My background also includes mental health research. As an undergraduate research assistant, I worked in a psychoneuroimmunology lab where I explored how mental health affects the body. Later, I collaborated with graduate students on a meta-analysis about repetitive thought. On my own, I led a research project on how eudemonic well-being could predict biomarkers, such as heart rate variability and cortisol levels. These experiences let me better understand the link between physical and emotional health.

I stay current in my field as a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). This membership provides me with access to new insights and techniques. I continually expand my knowledge to deliver more effective support to my clients.

What Working Together in Therapy Will Look Like

My counseling approach gives you the freedom to show up without filters. Therapy should be one of the few places where you don’t have to worry about how you’re being perceived. The world often tells us how we should think, feel, or act. In our sessions, I invite you to set those expectations aside and focus on expressing yourself.

I use person-centered principles and draw from Gestalt therapy to guide our work. I also incorporate motivational interviewing to support present-moment awareness and thoughtful exploration. My goal is to create a space where you remain grounded and open to learning more about yourself. Instead of following a fixed plan, I adapt to what you need and lead you in a direction that’s right for you.

In addition to in-person sessions, I offer both remote and teletherapy options. I can meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on your needs. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after time away, I’ll do my best to make the process safe, clear, and meaningful.

My Core Strengths & Beliefs as a Professional Counselor

Glenn Fister • LCMHCA, NCC

I believe my greatest strength as a counselor is my willingness to be vulnerable. I want clients to feel genuinely seen, but I know I won’t always get everything right. That’s why I stay open to feedback and regularly reflect on how I engage in sessions. If I misunderstand or miss something important, I encourage you to tell me. I want you to be comfortable correcting me, especially if it involves a lack of shared experience.

I value honesty, curiosity, and collaboration in the counseling process. I’ve found that therapy works best when we set clear goals from the start. Early on, I like to ask what you’re hoping to gain from our time together. One of the first questions I bring up is, “How will you know when it’s time to end therapy?” I don’t ask to rush things, but to define concrete landmarks we can use to track your progress. I want each person I see to get involved in shaping their care, so it feels purposeful and helpful to them.

The Hobbies That Help Me Find Balance Beyond the Office

Outside of work, I’ll take any excuse to get friends together for a game, especially volleyball, disc golf, or soccer. I love being active and spending time outdoors, and team sports let me connect with others in a fun, low-pressure way. I’m also a big fan of science fiction, whether it’s a favorite book or something new on the screen. I love stories that stretch the imagination and make me think.

When I’m not with friends or deep into a good story, you’ll probably see me checking on my plants. I find calm in small routines and enjoy watching things grow over time. Being active, appreciating nature, and hanging out with people I care about all help me stay balanced. These habits ground me and fuel the positive energy I bring into every session.
