Professional Charlotte NC Therapist & Counselor
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology from San Diego State University, right in my hometown. This foundational education paved the way for my further studies.
I then pursued and completed my master’s degree in Social Work from Boise State University. These academic experiences have equipped me with a deep understanding of societal dynamics and individual behaviors, which is essential in my role as a counselor.
My professional path began in healthcare administration, where I witnessed firsthand how various personal, environmental, and systemic challenges affect individuals’ physical and mental health. This experience was eye-opening, highlighting the urgent need to address mental health stigma, advocate for holistic support, and empower individuals.
My undergraduate studies in Criminal Justice at San Diego State University greatly shaped my career direction. I found myself deeply interested in understanding the root causes of crime, such as poverty, racism, family violence, and systemic gaps. It became clear to me that my passion was not in addressing the aftermath of crime but in prevention—ensuring individuals have the necessary tools to manage life’s challenges positively.
After shifting my career focus, I pursued a master’s in Social Work from Boise State University to equip myself with the skills to provide successful counseling. I aim to empower others with healthy coping strategies, helping them overcome internal and external stressors in a constructive manner.
My personal life experiences have also significantly influenced my career choice. Losing both my parents to cancer as a child was a profound challenge. The early intervention and counseling support I received during this tough period were invaluable. They helped me through my grief and ignited a passion within me to support others facing similar challenges.
Every day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others by helping them overcome life’s hurdles and achieve their goals. It’s a journey of empowerment, both for my clients and myself.
Although I am in my first year of practice since completing graduate school, my journey in this field began much earlier. Since the spring of 2023, I have been deeply involved in intensive in-home therapy, a specialized approach providing mental health services to individuals and families right in their own homes. This unique setting has allowed me to work closely with those experiencing significant mental health challenges or crises, offering them personalized and intensive treatment.
My expertise involves working with a variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, ADHD, depression, PTSD, and ODD. I am particularly passionate about providing counseling to children and families, as well as offering grief counseling to both children and adults.
Additionally, I have specialized training in Eco-Systemic Family Therapy, which has greatly influenced my work with children. This approach focuses on creating a supportive family structure, improving emotional balance, teaching coping skills, and establishing community support.
My work in community mental health has provided me with invaluable hands-on experience, allowing me to engage with a diverse range of clients with varying needs and backgrounds. I am committed to continuing to grow in this field and to use my knowledge and skills to support and empower my clients on their journey to wellness.
My counseling style is laid-back and client-centered, focusing on creating a comfortable, non-judgmental space for clients to feel safe and open. I believe in meeting clients exactly where they are each day, recognizing that everyone’s journey is unique. I love incorporating hands-on activities, since they engage clients and help process their experiences.
In my practice, I draw primarily from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These methodologies are excellent for helping clients normalize emotions, differentiate between helpful and unhelpful thoughts, and understand the interconnections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The goal is to construct solutions, focusing on empowerment and growth rather than dwelling on problems.
Working with children is a particular passion of mine. In sessions with young clients, you’ll find me engaging in interactive methods that can be both fun and effective, like throwing balls, playing games, and drawing pictures.
I also offer remote or teletherapy sessions, adapting to clients’ preferences for convenience and comfort. Initially, I recommend weekly meetings to establish a solid therapeutic relationship. Depending on individual needs, this could adjust to more or less frequent sessions.
For resources, I highly recommend “The Anxiety Workbook for Kids: Take Charge of Fears and Worries Using the Gift of Imagination” by Robin Alter and Crystal Clarke, especially for children dealing with anxiety. It’s a fantastic tool that complements the therapy process wonderfully. My tailored approach is all about finding what works best for you on your path toward healing and growth.
I firmly believe that counseling has the power to transform lives. It provides a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. This exploration, within the therapeutic relationship, enables clients to develop coping strategies and embark on a journey of personal growth. I see counseling as a collaborative process, where together, we work towards achieving your goals and creating lasting, positive transformation.
I build each session on empathy, respect, and collaboration. I deeply care about each client’s well-being and strive to understand their experiences from their perspective, always treating them with the utmost respect. I view clients as experts in their lives, and together, we work towards their desired outcomes.
I also deeply value flexibility in my sessions. I recall an intensive in-home client who struggled in traditional settings. By moving sessions to community locations, like parks and local stores, we created a dynamic environment conducive to her self-expression and engagement. This approach allowed her to feel less constrained and more connected, improving her therapy journey.
To maintain my effectiveness as a counselor, I prioritize self-care, setting boundaries, and keeping a healthy work-life balance. Engaging in activities like spending time with my family, practicing mindfulness, and enjoying hobbies helps me recharge and provide the best support possible.
Success in therapy varies for each client, based on their individual goals and progress. For me, success is seeing my clients feel empowered, gain insight, and make positive life changes. When clients develop coping skills, improve relationships, and enhance their mental wellness, that’s a significant achievement. The ultimate success is witnessing clients reach a point where they no longer need therapy, fully equipped to navigate life’s challenges independently.
In the next 5-10 years, I aim to evolve as a therapist, gaining experience with diverse populations and expanding my expertise in areas like trauma. I’m passionate about professional development, so I plan to pursue additional certifications in grief and play therapy. At the micro level, my goal is to provide personalized, empowering support to individuals, creating a safe space for clients to thrive.
On a macro level, I aspire to make a broader impact in the field of mental health counseling. This includes advocating for systemic changes, promoting mental health awareness, participating in community outreach, and collaborating with fellow professionals. I want to contribute to a more supportive and inclusive society for those seeking mental health help.
Ultimately, my ambition is to leave a meaningful impact on both individual lives and the wider mental health landscape, striving for a compassionate, equitable future in counseling and society.
When I’m not counseling, I love immersing myself in activities that enrich my life. Traveling is a huge passion of mine. Experiencing new environments and cultures broadens my perspective and fuels my personal philosophies. Hiking is another favorite pastime, especially with my German Shepherd, who’s also my emotional support animal.
Fishing offers me a peaceful escape, a time for reflection and patience. Cooking is another joy, a creative outlet where I experiment with flavors and ingredients. Most of all, I adore being a mom to my boy/girl twins, a journey that’s full of surprises and learning experiences. These hobbies keep me grounded, inspired, and constantly learning.
